01 — OVERVIEW
What is KA171?
The framework for mobility projects with countries outside the Erasmus+ programme.
KA171 is a type of project that gives higher education students and staff the opportunity to study or gain professional experience in a so-called "partner country not associated with the Programme" — meaning almost any country other than the 27 EU member states and the non-EU Programme countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, North Macedonia, Norway, Serbia and Türkiye).
These projects are supported by the European Union's external policy funds and extend the international dimension of inter-institutional mobility.
- § Funds are divided into 12 separate budget envelopes for 12 regions, sized according to EU external policy priorities.
- § Only higher education institutions holding an ECHE, or mobility consortia whose coordinating institution holds an ECHE, may apply.
- § A call for proposals is issued only once a year, and institutions may submit only one application per round.
- § Project duration is either 24 or 36 months.
- § Applications may cover 100% staff mobility, 100% student mobility, or any combination of the two.
- § Likewise, mobility may be 100% incoming, 100% outgoing, or any combination of both directions.
- § All grant payments for outgoing and incoming mobility are made by the coordinating institution.
